Also, the statement that "Mohammad received messages from God when he was in a trance" is incorrect. Muhammad received messages as he meditated, and was terrified when they first began. He had to be convinced that they were genuine revelations from God. Women's dress is always a big issue in books on Islam. Unfortunately, the two photos in the section on a "lady's wardrobe" show a woman in a fancy costume reserved for special occasions and rural women in a tent wearing face veils. The text itself, however, and other pictures of a nurse and a salesgirl, show women in western-style dress. Women dress modestly but with great variety. This past year we were homeschooling preschool. My son, who had turned 4 last summer, really disliked using pencils or crayons. We tried writing a few times, but I didn't think preschool was a time for tears. We compromised and instead of writing he did the first kumon book of cutting, play dough, finger paint and some coloring with pencils (the day on a calendar for math). Now that he turned 5 a few weeks ago, I told him that we really should do some writing. I got this book and amazingly, he is now interested and happy to do the pages!Granted, he finds them "easy" at age 5. This is not a problem, I think it is fine to do a few pages every day and quickly move on. I'm glad I followed the advice of other homeschool mothers and wait until he was ready to start and not worry that other 4 year olds in actual schools were writing their names. At this point he can read the instructions (with some help), and say "x" as he writes the letter X for example. And I'm glad he smiles and feels a sense of accomplishment. The amount of practice available in the book is sufficient for now. Of course, we will follow with further practice later on.This book teaches the letters based on how easy they are for a small child to write. So they will write I, T, F and E before A, B or C. This approach doesn't bother me at all. But if you want to teach the alphabet in order, perhaps this is not the book you want.This book has the age range of 3-5 years old. I have a 3 year old too. And I know kids vary in maturity and so on. But at least my children did not appear mature enough at age 3 to follow these instructions consistently. You know what my 3 year old does? She writes all over the page. This is fine, but she can just use a paper from the recycle pile for that :)Update after finishing the whole book:We finished this workbook about two months after we started. Again, my son is already 5 and able to read simple words. His letters are a little shaky, but he is able to form them correctly and just needs more practice and as we start lower case letters we keep practicing uppercase, but writing his name, last name and eventually copying short sentences. We have used several Kumon books and I am very pleased with the results overall.

This book is fantastic!!My son is 4 and it is great. If you are looking for a book to go along with it for additional practice forming the letters, try the Handwriting Without Tears series.Great book to introduce and learn the letters while also learning to form them.Only complaint I have would be to make the pages easier to tear out!

This uppercase letters book is really fantastic! My 3 year old loves to do the activities. We paired this book with the tracing book by Kumon and everyday she has a new activity. I'm a stay at home mom and wanted to help further my child's education before going to school in a fun non stressful or forceful way. Kumon makes it simple to understand and fun for kids. Wonderful product! I actually purchased the racing book at books a million so I would recommend buying through Amazon it saved me a few dollars. Book came in fast and in perfect condition!

My sister-in-law sent a few Kumon books to my 4 year old, he enjoys them so much that I ordered this one on Amazon.My son is a bilingual, he can sing alphabet song, but did not like holding pencil properly. However, after finishing other 2 Kumon books(tracing and Japanese alphabet), I thought he was ready for English alphabet. Itâ€™s been 3 weeks since he started this book, and he enjoys doing a page every day, sometimes asks me for 2nd time!Since the book does not follow alphabetical order, it might confuse your child if he/she is currently working on the order.wish this book came with stickers after completing each page like other Japanese Kumon books we have, but the price is great and worth buying it!

Great book to help teach kids letters. I have actually used this book several times with my 8 year old. He writes letters, but sometimes can be a little sloppy. When he starts to get sloppy we bought another set of upper and lowercase letters and make him start over. They are quick easy books. Starts off with straight lines, then goes into 3 letters, then review of the letters in the start of a word with a picture of that word. Kumon makes good products and this is another good one. My younger son struggles with writing letters backwards sometimes (both of my kids have struggled with this early on, I think most kids do), but this book has helped him with review of how to write letters.

Love the developmental approach to this (straight lines first, then curves--rather than going in alphabetical order). I cut out all the pages and inserted them into the TYH Dry Erase Pockets (which come complete with markers and attached erasers). They were an instant success with my 4 year old grandson who hadn't been especially interested in writing up to this point.

My kiddo was asking to practice writing. When she showed interested, I bought this. She loves it. She goes through phases where she wants to practice letters and then refuses to practice letters. I go with it. When she's wanting to practice, this is the book she wants to use.The content of this book is solid. Clear exercises that my child was able to complete independently after I gave instruction on each page. This allows me to be close by doing my own thing while she spends several minutes per page before I have to instruct again.The book is great quality paper and has nice binding.

I love this book and have used it with several of my children. I suggest the kumon alphabet games (butterfly) as a accompaniment or follow up to this book.

This is an excellent collection of some of O'Keefee's lesser known works. Many simple but beautiful paintings and drawings as well as informative articles.

Not what I was expecting, did not really like the book.

This book is outstanding. It provides the reader, or viewer, with the opportunity to enjoy and study many of O'Keeffe's works, in watercolor, pastels, and charcoal drawings. I was very satisfied with my choice. I searched and searched for a book that contained works other than her standard oils and watercolors, that have been so available in other books for years. As an art student, this one fits the bill as a great book to study one of my favorite artists and her varied use of techniques and mediums. Who else could make an avocado look so asthetically wonderful. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in the work of Georgia O'Keeffe. You won't be disappointed.

I enjoyed reading this book but I often find myself experiencing a range of emotions from "zeal" to confusion, and dismay. On one hand it seems the author is trying to appeal to orthodox Jews and Christians without offending either but on the other hand he seems to diminish who Jesus is to the sages of his time on Earth, referring to then as His contemporaries. I find the quotes from the Sages rather insightful and educational. Overall, it is a good read but one needs to have a good grasp of scripture to fully appreciate the information presented.

Not as much coverage of the Mishnah as I'd hoped. Also, not enough connection to the Bible, and some connections seemed to be missed that would have made a better work. Very short though, probably written very quickly. I read it in a couple of hours. Perhaps a good intro work for those curious about the Mishnah, but not enough meat for a theology buff.

I liked the Hebrew content - I disliked Dr. Blizzard's occasional near disdain for the Christian's focus on God and blessing over our meals. I would recommend this book for a strong Christian.

After watching a video by Dr. Roy Blizzard on Israel, and the book he had written on the Mishnah i ordered a copy. I found it to be everything I had expected and more,it helps that I enjoy listening to and reading Dr. Blizzards artic

THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE KINDLE VERSIONI bought the e-version for a trip to San Diego on Thanksgiving 2012. Turns out the latest physical book edition is 2011, but the only Kindle version is 2008. I looked up 6 restaurants in the SD area, 4 had gone out of business, 1 had moved locations 2 years ago, and the sixth had removed their dog-friendly patio seating last year.In addition to out-dated information, this is not an e-book; it is a bunch of text and some images dumped into a file. Table of Contents items are links to chapters, and some businesses have websites that are web links, but there are no links for map references, or for mentions in a review of another nearby businesses or park location. For example, the beginning of each chapter has "Pick of the Litter", a list of the best of each sub-section. It will say something like "MOST DOG-FRIENDLY PLACES TO EAT", BOB'S DINER, (page 100). Well, thanks for giving me a page number for a thing that has no page numbers.The two stars I've awarded this title are based on the previous 2 editions I've owned (paper books, not kindle books): past books have been pretty helpful and on a few occasions it's really saved me a lot of time. I'd recommend the current, physical edition of this book, but I absolutely would not recommend the Kindle version right now. If the publisher does eventually update the Kindle version, I'd recommend that you wait until there are reviews so you can figure out if they've actually spent some resources on designing a usable e-book.

We were new to the Bay Area when we purchased this book and it has become our go-to weekend guide! We simply decide where we want to go and then read through the descriptions to see what suits our mood. On really hot days, we'll look for a place that is nestled in a eucalyptus grove or on the beach. We can also pick out where we want to eat before or after our adventure. I haven't been blown away by the restaurant recommendations, but the park descriptions have been great.We have two smaller dogs and the author is reviewing from a big dog owner's perspective. Again, we just look at the initial summation (how highly rated it is, if it's off-leash or not) and then we look through to see what our dogs will appreciate most. They aren't too interested in getting wet or muddy, but they do love exploring new landscapes with few people around.All in all, this book is absolutely wonderful and we've gotten a lot of use out of it. I only wish they had one for every area!

Great reference book for a road trip Monterey to San Simeon to Santa Barbara to Paso Robles. Good for dog friendly beaches and places to walk. I give it four stars only because it is a bit dated for lodging and restaurant listings.

We have only had our dog 5 months, now, and I can't say that I have tried alot of the places reviewed in this book.I can say that I am overwhelmingly grateful that someone took the time to compile this information. I used to poke fun at my friends who couldn't bare to leave their dog at home, and now I find myself feeling the same way! The prospects of what this book has to offer is delightful.The book is broken down into counties. You will find listings for parks, recreation, places to stay, restaurants, and diversions. Depending on what the county has to offer, those that are profiled are rated. The book is fun to use and humorous. It is reassuring to see so many places that are dog friendly, and I anticipate patronizing quite a few of the listings.

I've only had the chance to try a few of the places mentioned in the book but so far it's been good. I am really looking forward to trying out some of the northern California locations next year. Overall I would say this is a great resource for someone with fur children.

Gave this as a gift to my daughter and her family who have adopted a lovely Golden Retriever from rescue. They were thrilled as they love to camp and explore with their family.This book has lots of information which will help them plan their family outings and camping or overnight travel, since now they will be traveling with Charly, the Golden Retriever!As I dog lover myself, I know that you must plan ahead to travel with a pet...and even to hike with a dog, or go to the beach. Their are many pet friendly places and this bookis a great resource.

This is a great book if you are traveling in California with a dog. Has a lot of the dog parks listed. I appreciate the fact that each town that has something in it has a listings and there is a rating system through out the book so I can tell at a glance what we can do and what the author thought of it. There is also great advice on fun places to go with dogs. My Husband and I grab it and our dog on the weekend and go out and adventure with it. Highly recommend it.

My book arrived quicker than expected, thank you seller. My only issue is that it's pretty short on So. Cal stuff to do. About 3/4 of the book is all North of Santa Barbara and the rest is south of there. I LOVE northern California and visit the Sierras as often as I can, just wish there was more about So Cal. It's a nice book tho, easy to read and find info.

I don't use my instant pot for recipes that are ones that I figure we won't eat. We eat simple and some of these recipes are much more extravagant that I was looking for. I was looking for more simple recipes for home cooking. I may or may not try to adapt them.

The result: I'm overwhelmed with possibilities to the point of inertia.This is a wonderfully basic cookbook with suggested variations for tuning recipes to specific palates. If you're overwhelmed by where your InstantPot can take you, then this is where you should start.

I DO love my Instant Pot. and this book is just what I needed to get me cooking without fear! The recipes are healthy and delicious, uncomplicated. I like it so much I have gifted it more than once!

The book is very easy to follow even for two old folks. The ingredients were familiar and basic which we enjoyed. The final straw was how delicious the recipes were. An altogether excellent cookbooks for all.

I pre-ordered this book and am so glad I did. There is a wide range of recipes, most of which I would try to make. It includes recipes for things I was making in the Instant Pot anyway, as I have had it almost 3 years, but everything so clearly written and easy to follow for either someone who is a newbie, or an old hand, like I am.I have made three recipes so far, the broccoli cheese soup, the spicy chicken chili, and the chocolate peanut butter cheesecake. They have all been a hit and easy to prepare. Especially the spicy chicken chili, which might be most easy to prepare chili I have ever made.It has a good introduction to all the settings of the pot, a rundown of helpful accessories, and a good index so recipes are easy to find. It has some really great pictures, but some people might wish there were more as so many recent cookbooks have illustrations of every recipe. That is the only negative thing I can find to say so far. I will be trying a LOT of the other recipes as I get a chance.

I have been cooking for over 40 years, with all the family favorites winning me a great reputation. After seeing my mother blow up her pressure cooker, I did not trust the instant pot's reputation. Well, I was wrong! The instant pot is great. However. I would not feel that way without this great little cookbook. The recipes are terrific! Directions are easy to follow. Ingredients are simple. Eating is healthy. I have even cut back on sweets and lost some weight...the recipes are that satisfying. And that says a lot for this Southern cook, who worshiped St. Sugar and St. Butter, to admit. Enjoy! This cookbook is a joy!

Wonderful variety of recipes, including a good vegetarian section. The Mushroom Risotto was a huge hit, both the vegetarian and meatatarian in the family loved it. I bought a copy to give as a gift with a second Instant Pot, and will be doing the same for an upcoming wedding.

i have not made any of the recipes yet, but I am very much looking forward to using these books. I have approximately 10 instant pot books. this one was my latest. Some of them I will never, ever use and will usher them off to new homes. Even though I have not yet used this book, i have read it, and it seems quite in line with what I know about instant pots, meals, timing. Sometimes i look at a recipe and think to myself, "this time isn't going to work..." but not with this book. I am a seasoned pot head. Believe me, we know some of these things intuitively after a while. The BEST thing is that there are at least 90% of the recipes that look good to me, that appeal to me, and seem to call out my name, beckoning mostly to my tummy. I can hardly wait to try these. Each section has good varieties of recipes to choose from to suit the mood and the meal.... SOOOO Can't wait to try some out.

Great collection of recipes! I made the pear crisp last weekend and it was so good. The only thing I don't like is the times are too long. Cut chicken doesn't take 10 minutes. It's more like 7. So we end up with dry chicken sometimes because I forget. Lol. They've all been edible though.

I LOVE this book. My only criticisms would be that 1) the first chapter read more like a collegiate paper or dissertation. Although extremely informative, I was harder to get through than the other two. 2) There was no summation to finalize the book or to tie each of the author's ideas together. 3) There was no suggestion of what's next... e.g. how do we get such instruction enforced, how do we get the knowledge in the hands of legislators and state boards of education. After reading, I had mixed feelings about the knowledge I had acquired from these varied analyses, as they left us with minimum direction.Please note that this criticism does not take away from what the book offers. The research alone is worthy of a 5 star review. Personally, the book provides a great deal of well researched information and data for my ongoing project as well as for my edification as a student of the art of pedagogy of African American students.

Very interesting take on African Americans and education. This book delves into the past, exploring early narratives of education, covers current academic strife, and offers some ideas on what changes need to be made in the world of education. Any urban teacher should read this!

A necessary text for educators!

This is just a fantastic book. I could have done without Steele, but Hilliard and Perry were on point in their analysis of education today.

I loved this book. The book gave a good hypothesis as to why African Americans succeeded in education previously but seem to be struggling in the current environment. One thing that was profound to me was that for so long African Americans and education were tied to freedom and now that education is free, what are we going to tie education to. Great Book!!!!

About the Author

W. Larry Kenney, PhD, is the Marie Underhill Noll Chair in Human Performance and a professor of physiology and kinesiology at Pennsylvania State University at University Park. He received his PhD in physiology from Penn State in 1983. Working at Noll Laboratory, Kenney is researching the effects of aging and disease states such as hypertension on the control of blood flow to human skin and has been continuously funded by NIH since 1983. He also studies the effects of heat, cold, and dehydration on various aspects of health, exercise, and athletic performance as well as the biophysics of heat exchange between humans and the environment. He is the author of more than 200 papers, books, book chapters, and other publications. Kenney was president of the American College of Sports Medicine from 2003 to 2004. He is a fellow of the American College of Sports Medicine and is active in the American Physiological Society. For his service to the university and his field, Kenney was awarded Penn State University's Faculty Scholar Medal, the Evan G. and Helen G. Pattishall Distinguished Research Career Award, and the Pauline Schmitt Russell Distinguished Research Career Award. He was awarded the American College of Sports Medicine's New Investigator Award in 1987 and the Citation Award in 2008. Kenney has been a member of the editorial and advisory boards for several journals, including Medicine and Science in Sports and Exercise, Current Sports Medicine Reports (inaugural board member), Exercise and Sport Sciences Reviews, Journal of Applied Physiology, Human Performance, Fitness Management, and ACSM's Health & Fitness Journal (inaugural board member). He is also an active grant reviewer for the National Institutes of Health and many other organizations. He and his wife, Patti, have three children, all of whom are or were Division 1 college athletes. Jack H. Wilmore, PhD, retired in 2003 from Texas A&M University as a distinguished professor in the department of health and kinesiology. From 1985 to 1997, Wilmore was chair of the department of kinesiology and health education and the Margie Gurley Seay endowed centennial professor at the University of Texas at Austin. Before that, he served on the faculties at the University of Arizona, the University of California, and Ithaca College. Wilmore earned his PhD in physical education from the University of Oregon in 1966. Wilmore published 53 chapters, more than 320 peer-reviewed research papers, and 15 books on exercise physiology. He was one of five principal investigators for the Heritage Family Study, a large multicenter clinical trial investigating the possible genetic basis for the variability in the responses of physiological measures and risk factors for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes to endurance exercise training. Wilmore's research interests included determining the role of exercise in the prevention and control of both obesity and coronary heart disease, determining the mechanisms accounting for alterations in physiological function with training and detraining, and factors limiting the performance of elite athletes. A former president of the American College of Sports Medicine, Wilmore received the American College of Sports Medicine's Honor Award in 2006. In addition to serving as chair for many ACSM organizational committees, Wilmore was on the United States Olympic Committee's Sports Medicine Council and chaired their Research Committee. He was a member of the American Physiological Society and a fellow and former president of the American Academy of Kinesiology and Physical Education. Costill, PhD, is the emeritus John and Janice Fisher chair in exercise science at Ball State University in Muncie, Indiana. He established the Ball State University Human Performance Laboratory in 1966 and served as its director for more than 32 years. Costill has written and coauthored more than 430 publications over the course of his career, including six books and articles in both peer-reviewed and lay publications. He was the original editor in chief of the International Journal of Sports Medicine for 12 years. Between 1971 and 1998, he averaged 25 U.S. and international lecture trips each year. He was president of the ACSM from 1976 to 1977, a member of its board of trustees for 12 years, and a recipient of ACSM Citation and Honor Awards. He has received numerous other honors, including the Outstanding Professional Achievement Award from Ohio State University, the President's Award at Ball State University, and the Distinguished Alumni Award from Cuyahoga Falls Public Schools. Many of his former students are now leaders in the fields of exercise physiology, medicine, and science. Costill received his PhD in physical education and physiology from Ohio State University in 1965. He and his wife of 55 years, Judy, have two daughters. Now retired, Dr. Costill is a private pilot, auto and experimental airplane builder, competitive masters swimmer, and former marathon runner.

Wow. Great read! Well structured content builds up your understanding of the relevant physiological processes, then covers in detail the changes that accompany exercise in the body. Information is well cited, with example studies, and it's clearly pointed out when research has been inconclusive on a point.

Pictures figures etc on the Amazon Kindle version are tiny and my PC version of Kindle won't expand them. On IPAD I can click and get the larger version of the pictures. I returned this but may re-buy. Would not recommend the Amazon Kindle version to someone looking for a PC centric version of the book. Their website with the advertised apps videos etc is unclear how exactly you can obtain these resources.

Used this book during a PU class. Unlike many university books, this one was very easy to understand and easy to read.

I read this book when I was much younger and no one knew about this man nor much about Arabia. I was invited to be part of a team that would start an airline for the United Arab Emirates, a rather new country (formally the Trucial Coast- tribes that warred against each other and were Bedu and pearl divers). The airline was called Hamarein Air in about 1976 and was started by one little Bedu named Saif Hamarein. He owned small mini marts all over the Emirates, but especially in Ras al Khaima and Sharjah. he raised money from those to buy a 747!I read this book as I started departing from LAX and since the flight was over 27 hours with a stop in Paris and an over night, I finished it.This man, Sir Wilfred Thesiger was remarkable and although only 29 years old, struck off into uncharted lands even the Bedu did not dare cross. He traveled and lived among the tribes of all the areas he charted and learned amazing things from the nations. Because of him today, we learned much about a peoples unknown to the western world. I often wondered what happened to him and since we did not have computers, there was little way to actually look for him. He seemed to have vanished. But on my second time living among the Emirates in the 1990's, they found him in a mud hut in Africa being cared for by an Ethiopian woman and he had satchels of film never processed from his trips in the 1940's! I own 2 of these unpublished photos of his journeys and had the amazing pleasure of meeting my idol at 90+ years old! I cherish my photo with him. He was a remarkable man who did much to bring us the very news about corners of the earth he was later to regret as it brought westernization to the quiet countries and people he adored.

I'm only about a quarter through this book, and I'm enthralled. Takes you back to another world, before oil riches flowed, to a time when conditions were unrelentingly harsh and unforgiving, where the people were hard and austere, accustomed to a life of great demands and hardships, yet also capable of great courtesy and hospitality. The author explains why he was drawn into the desert and living with the Bedu and describes how the time he spent there was the happiest of his life.Thesiger served as a foreign service officer in Sudan for a number of years as a young man before setting off on his 2 crossings of the empty quarter in southern Arabia. He notes the great abundance of wildlife in Sudan: herds of thousands of elephants, an abundance of lions (he shot 70 himself on hunting trips while stationed there). It's such a sad shame that it's almost all gone now after years of poaching, over-hunting, and civil war. Though apparently there has been some return of these animals on a much smaller scale with some degree of peace in South Sudan.It's hard to imagine that a description of desert life--traveling with camels and how important they were to survival, the daily hardships and rituals of endurance that were just routine, the constant danger--would be fascinating, but it is.Even though Thesiger's travels happened only about 60 years ago, they seem taken from a different era, a much different and wild time. It is, for example, jolting to read that slavery still very much exists in Arabia at this time. And the religious fundamentalism is striking too: for example, a Beduoin is taken aback when Thesiger tells him that in England they have weathermen who can tell you when it is going to rain; the Bedu think that is something only God knows and that it is blasphemy to say otherwise.

This is one of the all time great adventure and travel books. Thesiger describes a world and a lifestyle that is now passed away, but existed not very long ago. He was the last of the British explorers who can nonchalantly describe things like going without water for days at a time as if his local deli had forgotten to include sugar packets with his order of coffee.If you read this book, you should also catch the documentary about Thesiger on the Journey Pictures channel on YouTube. In it, you can hear him, shortly before his death, reflect on his life and adventures. The filmmakers also visit and interview Thesiger's Bedouin companions and contrast their past and contemporary lives. The juxtaposition and contrast is interesting to watch and ponder.
