Every time I re-read one of Maeve Binchy's novels, I am transported to the wonderful locations about which she writes, and I fall in love all over again with her cast of perfectly realized flesh-and-blood characters. I feel again the loss of this wonderful author, and miss the excitement of reading a fresh new novel or story from her pen.The story centers around the establishment of a new heart clinic in Dublin, and the people who come together to make it a successful and useful venture. I cannot recommend this book any higher to anyone who enjoys peaceful, pleasant reading, beautifully accomplished. Along with a visit in Dublin and the surrounding countryside, there are some brief side trips to other places, such as Poland, Greece, and Italy. This lovely book is definitely a trip worth taking. Vintage Binchy.

Maeve Binchy is like a good friend you are always happy to visit with again. She is down to earth, honest, and her characters are not perfect, but flawed and weak and struggling. The reader can relate. The situations she expounds on in her books are familiar to anyone who has lived a good long life. The family situations are like 'aha' moments. They are situations we've all touched on. Heart and Soul, her recent book was like that. The only thing, in my estimation, that makes Maeve Binchy's books a little tedious to read are there are so many characters, that it is hard to keep them all straight. Each one seems to hold just as much importance as the next and the mind of the reader has to keep it all sorted out. But when I see a new book with her name on it, you can bet your knickers I"m going to be grabbing it up and reading it. She's a winner. See Gee

I became a HUGE Maeve Binchy fan after reading my 1st book. I'd really like to give this 3.5 stars b/c it is better than just liking it. None of her books I have put down & thought "Wow, that was one of the best books I have ever read", which is when I would give 5 stars now but I usually smile & think "That was really good". She writes a lot of short stories, which I don't care for & some of them don't end they just stop, which really drives me crazy. Another style of hers is to write a chapter about each character but tie them all together in a place or theme & those seem more like a one story so you don't notice so much that it is really short stories. But this, & several others of hers, are what you would call a regular novel & I totally enjoyed it. Originally I got it from the library but liked it so much I wanted my own copy, as I have done w/ quite a few of hers. Once I start one of her books I can hardly put it down till I finish it & I will reread all the ones I have, probably more than once.

I guess you generally get the point, but I thought this was hard to read. It jumped from character to character paragraph to paragraph. I never knew who I was reading about until it was almost time to switch to someone else. It assumed that you knew some of the characters (like David). I saw a few typos (like Aiden was spelled Aden, once). Overall, I'm a little disappointed I paid for this book.

It is so refreshing to see such well defined characters and what a story teller Maeve Binchy is. I had the privilege of going to a book club in Dublin where Maeve was the featured speaker back in the mid 90's, and have been a fan ever since. Her writing rules were 1. Write what you know, 2. Write like you talk, 3. write every day, and 4. submit everything you write. Her books are so deeply immersed in her culture and are a real treat to read. Unfortunately Marve passed away in 2012. I urge you to read her treasure trove of novels.

I've been reading MB for 20 years, now. I've been a little out of order, as this was my last read of her's. I am now truly sad that it is over, my journey with this author. Heart and Soul encapsulated her Ireland, old and new, and her characters exemplified both the innocence of a traditional country as well as they embraced a newly renovated land. Familiar readers will recognize characters from other stories well-woven into this one. New readers may do well to read Quentin's and Scarlet Feather first, but can easily navigate with Heart and Soul if they begin here first. And make sure to continue, as these characters will appear in Whitethorn Woods and Minding Frankie. Even A Week In Winter will reveal some characters who are easily recognizable!She was a master, a beloved master whose prose is not to be missed, yet her story-telling will be....gravely.~Always, MCM

it was very easy to lose myself in this story lots of things going on and having simon and maude includedmade it more enjoyable.

Every once in a while I feel like I need a dose of Maeve Binchy! Her books, while somewhat light, have interesting and very human characters. I think the ones in this particular book are inspiring for the way they all work together and support each other. I recommend this book!
