I'm still in the early stages and trying to process the death of my husband. I was looking for books to help get me through the process and I'm glad I found this one. My story is somewhat similar: my husband was also diagnosed at age 33 and had his first crainotomy for an astrocytoma. Things were good for a while; he went back to work in full, ski cap and all, we took mini vacations, and our daughter was born less than 14 months later. He loved being a father. Unfortunately, when she was 2 1/2, and right after he'd accomplished something crucial at work, the tumor returned as GBM. The next year and a half were not great - the treatment wreaked havoc on his body. Then they found a third, inoperable tumor, and that led to a final two month decline. I hate this disease so much and I still feel so robbed. But I love this book. It gives me hope that grief can be dealt with, including for my daughter who I fear will not remember him at all. Thank you, Nancy, for writing this.

I was a little apprehensive and cynical before I started Both Sides Now, not wishing to spend another entire book reading words preaching hardcore rah-rah optimism in the face of adversity. But the author drew me in completely and quelled my reservations with vivid and sensitive descriptions of the people in her life. Her honesty and candidness lift this memoir from beginning to end and it is couched in gentle yet defiant language with the bittersweet soundtrack of Joni Mitchell’s music playing in the background. I came to love and root for Nancy and Brett and felt the hurt and despair that she aptly re-created on the page. I felt the agony of the long illness and long goodbye, and the terror and paralysis of suddenly becoming a single mother with two young children to raise and support. When Nancy floated the idea of leaving New York for Colorado, I was right there with her strident friend: yes - you can do it! How thrilling to read about her new start out west and the colorful journey of falling in love again. Nancy also presents a painfully realistic picture of the struggles of a newly blended family. Her story is tucked tenderly in hope (and comfort food) but surrounded with a hard edge of bravery, grit and authenticity. Great memoir, great writer, I want to read more of her.

Initially read this touching, eloquent book in 2014 and it was, without question, my favorite book of the year. I recommend it regularly when chatting in person and recently realized I had been remiss in not posting a review on Amazon.Exceptionally well-written, moving, and thoughtful. Nancy's authentic and unique voice creates a reflective, heartfelt memoir that is moving and insightful. If you haven't yet read this incredible memoir, order it today. You will be so very glad you did.

This is a must read memoir. Within seconds you are taken in to Nancy's world. She shares intimate moments of her love for and commitment to her husband, Brett, as he battled cancer, as well as to her children, too young to comprehend what was happening to their father. I am in awe of her spirit as she learned to take care of Brett, their twins, and eventually, herself.I read Nancy's memoir in on day. She found an honest and beautiful way to share her experiences with her readers. I found myself teary not only because of the pain she, Brett, their families, and friends went through, but also because I felt the deep love Nancy and Brett shared. I found myself cheering for Nancy as she developed the courage to start another chapter in her life and find love again.I admire Nancy as a woman, a wife, a mother, a friend, a stepmother, and as a writer. She is passionate about each role. She never stops learning and growing. Nancy Sharp is an inspiration.

Reading Nancy Sharp's book, "Both Sides Now: A True Story of Love, Loss and Bold Living" was both an incredibly cathartic read as well as a story for all that love and move forward through grief. Nancy's story had similarities to my own story, yet told with such a lovely articulation of her experience and pain. Throughout most of the book she speaks to her late husband Brett as if she is speaking to him and not of him - this device allows the reader to experience such an intimate look at their marriage through all the joys and sorrows. Though I cried through much of this book, it is really the story of a family that loves, shows immense courage during adversity and the ability to move forward with openness to create a new life and a new family, while keeping those that are gone safely in their hearts.

I loved this book ~ not often do I find memoirs as compelling, honest, heartbreaking, and inspiring as this one! Nancy Sharp is a writer who not only brings her own poignant story to life, but also writes breathtaking prose. Her family story is one that made a difference to the way I now deal those big life challenges that come without notice. We read it for Book Club and discussing it made for one of the best meetings we've had!!!
