My journey started with LPR and a variety of strange throat sensations that I didn't realize was reflux for a few years. I went to a Dr. who perscribed a PPI and had a TERRIBLE reaction to it. The result was that I would get painful chest burning reflux after almost every meal. The PPI felt like it broke me. Simply put, this book changed the quality of my life since. I've tried probiotics, painful trial and error to find my "trigger foods," tried upping my thyroid function through Peating and gone SCD. This was the only diet that provided a massive reduction in my reflux without cutting out carbs to the point of physical exhaustion.I can't give this anything less than 5 stars because the results were that dramatic. I had been on 2 zantac maxium strength per day (which never really worked the way I'd hoped) and after 1.5 weeks on this diet I was able to ween myself off without rebound acid. This was not possible prior. Missing a single zantac would result in awful reflux that was even worse than when I started the drug.A couple other notes about the book. The content is very scientific at times, almost like you're reading a medical paper. I think you'll see other reviewers agreeing with this. I think it's good to read the book to understand why this diet works but you could honestly just download the Fast Tract app (highly recommend doing so) and start aiming to eat under 40 FP per day. Because I was ambitious I went straight for getting under 25 FP every day and the results were noticeable in one week.A few other notes... After 2 months of being on this diet I cannot say I have fully healed my digestion. I've moved on to going to a functional medicine practitioner and getting a round of tests for what I think threw me into bacterial overgrowth in the first place. For me, a highly stressful two years resulted in adrenal fatigue and I suspect a possible parasite is in play (awaiting test results). Still, sticking with this diet made the most acute and painful symptoms of reflux disappear. So I still follow it every day.Final point - this diet will feel very restrictive if you've not tried diets before. For a lot of people, it might be that you're not fed up enough with feeling sick yet. I got to the point where I could cut out any food if it meant I wouldn't get painful reflux. Eating for comfort, which probably caused some of your issues in the first place, will need to be re-evaluated if you want to get better... it reaaaaally sucks, I know.
I became a low-fat vegan several years back, which, depending upon one's food choices, can be a diet quite high in fiber. I understand now I was eating excessive fiber, and eating it late at night as well. Not surprisingly (I understand this after reading this book), I developed a severe case of GERD and reflux laryngitis, often being without a voice for days at a time. My doc prescribed Prevacid for 2 months which helped, but this did not address the core cause. When I stopped the meds, the laryngitis returned, and I was unable to talk for several weeks.Wanting to address the underlying cause of my GERD & laryngitis (as opposed to just treating symptoms), I bought this book, thinking I had nothing to lose to try the diet for a few days. Within 48 hours of eating only low-FP (vegan in my case) foods, I had my voice back, and the GERD was almost immediately improved. That was 1-1/2 years ago, and though I don't limit myself now to only low FP foods, I do avoid high FP foods, and rarely if ever have a reoccurrence of GERD or voice problems.I'll admit it's a bit more challenging to do this as a vegan, but I believe it's a small price to pay not to have to take PPI's the rest of my life. What helped me was to make a list from Appendix C of "safe (low-FP)" vegan foods, and also a list of foods I could have occasionally. My go-to vegan low FP list (when I had severe GERD) included almonds, avocados, beets, broccoli, butternut squash, brussels sprouts, celery, cauliflower, carrots, cantaloupe, dates, watermelon, jasmine rice (with it's negative FP), hummus, pretzels, kale, mushrooms, pecans, snow peas, peaches, popcorn, pineapple, rice cakes/crackers, strawberries, tofu, seitan, boca burgers, walnuts, tomatoes and many other low-FP veggies and fruits. I never feel deprived by limiting the FP of my foods choices. My maintenance diet includes many of the moderate FP foods, and I keep my list of foods handy in the kitchen. I use portion control and also jasmine rice with it's "negative FP" rating to counter the effects of an occasional higher FP meal.BTW, I'm 68 years old, being a low-fat vegan has improved my energy level amazingly, and resolved a long standing cardio issue... so I don't recommend eating the low-FP high fat animal protein foods that are listed . . . but in my case, if you're vegan or flexitarian, I highly recommend trying Robillard's Fast Tract diet, especially if you're unable/unwilling to tolerate the effects of long term PPI use.
Ever wonder why low FODMAP diet still doesn't relieve IBS and GERD symptoms? This book(and phone app) will show you why and how to control them. The classification in this book makes it easy to construct a diet based on the fermentation potential of the vegetable matter we eat. The principle is the same as FODMAPs, in that you begin low to get a handle on your symptoms, and then adjust by either adding higher fermentative foods in small amounts or tuning the macros. However the difference lies in that the fermentation potential actually makes an accurate assessment of how symptomatic a given food is, and in what amount. Including varieties and breeds of the same produce and how to calculate any novel foods' fermentation potential. Thus, you can quickly begin to eat far more vegetables and/or starches without symptoms. Then find your comfort level and fill out the rest with fat and protein. Really glad I got this one.P.S. I can't reccomend the app(Android/Apple) highly enough. And it's routinely updated. If you're familiar with whole process because you're a long time sufferer of digestive issues like me, and have been reading around in the health scene, the app alone may suffice. Norman Robillard was on Robb Wolf's podcast if I recall correctly, so check that out for an intro. All the best!
