The author did extensive research and presented historically accurate facts. Nothing in the book is a fabrication. The book is compelling for its raw honesty. I applaud the author for presenting both sides of the Israeli/Palestinian story. The book portrays the lives of two strong women who did their best to make the world a better place using the limited means they had. Their friendship is based on love and respect for one another. Their moving message is that peace is possible. I urge readers to form their own opinion.

Although this is a fascinating relationship intertwined with the history of the Palestinian/Israeli endless warring, I found it hard to follow..Many characters and flashbacks of their lives.. educational but hard to follow at times..

A good book about the amazing lives and friendships of Ruth Dayan and Raymonda Tawil. This book is full of lots of names and dates, many of which will be familiar to those who know anything about the history of the conflict in the Holy Land. Raymonda and Ruth's connection with these people, many of whom were major players in the politics of the region, provide a unique and interesting perspective. Ruth shows us that Moshe Dayan was not the horrible warmonger that many Palestinians to this day think he was. And Raymonda shows us that Yasser Arafat was a complex and very human person, not the monster that Israeli politicians consistently portrayed him as. I was struck by how both Ruth and Raymonda considered themselves to have been born in the same country and not until near Oslo did they ever consider a two-state solution. Both women consistently fought for a single-state solution where the values and ideals that the Israeli democracy stood for would be extended to all peoples west of the Jordan River. The book alludes to a period of lost opportunity after the 1967 war. Had Israel truly annexed the west bank after 1967 and offered citizenship and rights to all Palestinians in the territories, peace likely could have been found and there would never have been the uprisings and conflict that we still see. Palestinians would have loved to have democracy and freedom as the Israelis had. They were ready for it at that time. Instead Israel has systematically eliminated any and all moderate peace partners they might have had. This book tries very hard to portray the events as the two women experienced them in their individual lives. So we do see both sides of the conflict to a large degree. Both women had many friends on the opposite side, and both were well respected by Israeli and Palestinian leaders. Despite this, it's hard to hide the fact that Israeli government actors, particularly the likes of Ariel Sharon, have acted extremely badly towards Palestinians over the years. And the book doesn't hide some of Raymonda's horrible experiences at the hands of brutal Israeli military governors and how she was interrogated for 45 straight days in one of Israel's most notorious prisons. The book also doesn't gloss over the fact that many elements within Arafat's circle were violent and there were bus bombings and many civilians died before Arafat renounced terrorism and sought peace. We see, though, that Israel wasn't that interested in peace with Arafat, using Oslo as a means of pushing him into a very small corner (virtually a prisoner in his compound in Ramallah) until he died under what many Palestinians consider mysterious circumstances. At the end of the book, the author makes a comment that the Israeli government seems to fear peaceful resistance and humanization of Palestinians more than outright terrorism. They never quite knew what to do with Raymonda, who they viewed as a trouble maker. Raymonda ultimately was exiled from the land she loved, partly by choice, but under clear pressure from Israel and extreme factions within the PLO. Very sad, but her mission to promote peace continues through people reading this book.Well worth a read, and if you don't know all the names and dates, don't worry, you'll still get the picture that Ruth and Raymonda wish to present through Anthony David's writing. For some this book may be best listened to rather than read.

Marvelous book! Filled with unique insights concerning the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. It's important to read multiple books in order to form your own opinions regarding this complicated, highly complex, heated topic . Other books I recommend: Son of Hamas: A Gripping Account of Terror, Betrayal, Political Intrigue, and Unthinkable Choices by Mosab Hassan Yousef with Ron Brackin; Once an Arafat Man: The True Story of How a PLO Sniper Found a New Life by Tass Saada and Dean Merrill; Zvi: The Miraculous Story of Triumph Over the Holocaust by Elwood McQuaid; Holy War for the Promised Land: Israel at the Crossroads by David Dolan; From Time Immemorial: The Origins of the Arab-Jewish Conflict over Palestine by Joan Peters

I have recommended this book to all my friends. The story of the two women, both fighting for peace while standing at odds with their own families, is is a story of immense courage to fight for peace between Arabs and Israelis so the future of their people would not continue to be death in the throes of war. The writer has achieved compassionately relaying the merits of each cultures belief of the.right of settlement on the same single territory. Readers will find it difficult to say goodnight to Ruth and Raymond's and their improbable friendship.

Two remarkable women from completely opposite backgrounds reveal the very real possibility of not just peace, but close personal relationships, in the Israeli-Palestinian conflict. In spite of belonging to families with very strong military ties in the Mideast, they established and maintained a very strong friendship in spite of political and even family opposition for forty years. Both women worked for peace on both sides of the border, in spite of house arrests, threats to their lives, and the shelling of their homes and neighborhoods. This book is so encouraging when it comes to world peace. It is a demonstration of what can really happen when people choose to engage in friendship, rather than waging war on innocent people who suffer the consequences of warmongers.

This book is about Moishe Dayan’s wife Ruth Dayan and Yassar Arafat’s mother in law Raymonda Tawil.Feminists will love reading about these bright, articulate, determined and caring women who tried to bring peace between the Israelis and Palestinians. The downside of the book comes from the man Raymonda chose to write the book. He was so pro-Palestinian and anti-Israel that the historical context paints the Israelis as always the bad guys and the Palestinians as the suffering good guys.

A wonderful look into the emotional bonds between two women who both loved their country. We see the way to peace and the roadblocks to peace at the same time. One comes away with respect for both Israelis and Palestinians. And one feels the hopelessness of a peaceful solution ever being worked out. We can only pray that a young Ruth and Raymonda come forward to carry on the struggle for harmony between two peoples more alike than different.
